Abstract: This study was conducted following a pilot study looking at postoperative pain. Recent studies suggest genetic differences have a strong influence on the perception of pain. We carried out a genetic association study between postsurgical pain and response to opioid analgesics following a standardised anaesthetic. Analysis of 119 patients suggest that preoperative identification of single nucleotide polymorphisms of patients may allow for individualisation of opioid dosing, and better management of perioperative pain. As well as DNA analysis of blood samples, we are also looking at fentanyl assays of each patient.
