Description: In Australia and New Zealand, emergency laparotomies are one of the most common emergency procedures performed across all surgical specialties. These are high-risk procedures that are performed on high-risk patients and are associated with significant rates of morbidity and mortality as well as substantial healthcare costs. It is estimated that reducing the length of stay of emergency laparotomy patients by one day will likely save $34 million per annum.
